Success criterion 2.5.2

Pointer Cancellation

Actions fire on the up-event, and can be aborted or undone, so accidental touches can be cancelled.

  • Level A
  • Principle 2: Operable
  • Guideline 2.5: Input Modalities

In a user’s words

“My hand shook, I brushed 'Delete', and it was gone before I could lift my finger.”

Who this helps: Motor Impairments, Tremor

What each role can do

Product manager
Require that destructive actions can be cancelled or undone.
Designer
Design so that sliding off a control cancels it; offer undo for important actions.
Developer
Trigger actions on click or pointer-up, never on pointer-down, unless essential.
Tester
Press a control, slide away, release; confirm nothing fires.

Once it is fixed

“I slid my finger away and nothing happened. That's the best nothing ever!”

The quotes are written to illustrate the criterion. They are not testimonials from real people. For the official wording, find 2.5.2 in the W3C quick reference for WCAG 2.2 (opens in a new tab).
